The initial impression of tasting it at the launch of the Canon EOS R was its large size. Naturally, because at that time I brought the Sony Alpha A7 III with a 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 OSS FE lens and compared it directly with the EOS R paired with RF 24–105mm f / 4 L IS USM lens.
The story will be different if compared to Canon DSLR cameras, EOS R is certainly slimmer. After finally arriving at Dailysocial's editorial desk and trying it more intensely, the larger body dimensions and hand grips make it more ergonomic and comfortable to hold.
For the design of EOS R itself, in my opinion, it appears modern and cool. The EOS R framework is made of a magnesium alloy material that is resistant to extreme weather, with dimensions of 136x98x84 mm, and weighs 660 grams including batteries.
The EOS R has a 3.2-inch 2.1 million dot resolution touch screen with a fully-articulated mechanism, can be pulled to the side and rotated to 180 degrees which are certainly loved by the videographer or content creators.
On top of that, there is an OLED paneled electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a resolution of 3.69 million dots and a magnification level of 0.76x. Then, on the top plate, there is a small OLED panel that displays a number of camera parameters.
Intuitive Camera Control
EOS R has a fairly large grip, I found no problems when installing with an RF 24–105mm f / 4 L IS USM lens. Everything we need to adjust the camera's exposure settings is available on the button and dial or physical knob.
The main physical knob (main dial) is near the shutter button by default to set the shutter speed. Then, the second physical knob (quick control dial) to set the aperture value. Then through the M-Fn button, we can access white balance.
In the RF 24–105mm f / 4 L IS USM lens there are three rings, first to set the focal length, second for manual focus, and the third can be adjusted as desired - if I use it for ISO or exposure compensation. The navigation buttons on the side of the screen, up, down, right, and left can also be set as shortcuts for features or settings that we often use.
The set menu contains various important shortcuts such as AF method, AF operation, drive mode, metering mode, image quality, white balance, picture style, and aspect ratio can be accessed via the set button or Q icon in the upper right corner of the screen. We can use the navigation buttons or touch screen to adjust it.
One more, Canon also offers a new way to control the EOS R, the M-Fn bar, which is right on the right side of the viewfinder. This small part is a kind of multi-function touch bar that can be programmed as needed, for example providing quick access to autofocus, ISO, white balance, and others. There are two ways it works, namely by swiping (swipe) and tap (tap) the right or left.
The SD card slot is on the right, there is only one memory card slot on the EOS R and supports UHS-II cards. Access to the battery is on the lower side, the battery life is claimed to offer 370 shots at a single charge and 450 shots when using power saving mode.
The EOS R uses the same battery as a Canon DSLR in general, type LP-E6N with a capacity of 1,865 mAh. Uniquely, the EOS R can be charged via USB type C - even though the sales package also provides a charging dock.
The USB type C port is on the left, along with a mini HDMI port, external microphone, headphones, and terminal remote control. BG-E22 battery grip accessories are also available which provide longer shooting capacity and comfort when shooting vertically.

Canon's first 35mm mirrorless full frame camera features a 30.3-megapixel CMOS sensor with a low-pass filter to reduce the moiré effect and is equipped with Digital Lens Optimizer to correct lens diffraction and aberration.
His brain is a DIGIC 8 image processor with a focus speed of 0.05 seconds, with a very impressive Dual Pixel autofocus system. In total there are 5,655 selectable focus points, which cover 88% of the vertical span and 100% of the horizontal span on compatible lenses.

In addition, the EOS R can capture raw images in 14-bit (CRW) and C-RAW compressed images. C-RAW can reduce file size by up to 40% without losing real image quality, which can certainly save hard drives and memory cards.
The following are photos from the Canon EOS R with an RF 24–105mm f / 4 L IS USM lens. This lens has a constant aperture of f / 4 in the entire zoom range. My favorite is when shooting with EOS R at a focal length of 105 mm and an f / 4 aperture, the resulting bokeh is very soft and the image remains stable because this lens already supports Dual Sensing IS to dampen vibrations when shooting.
4K UHD video can be recorded by the EOS R up to 25/30 fps using ALL-I compression or IBP standard with a maximum bitrate of 480MBps and crop 1.7x. Complete with 4K capture frame feature, where you can take frames from 4K recordings and save them as photos.
If you want to record 50/60 fps video, you have to go down to Full HD resolution. Then, for high frame rates of up to 100 fps video must go down again to HD resolution.
Yes, the issue of crop 1.7x at 4K and high frame rate video on HD can indeed be a deal breaker for videographers or professional photographers who have high video requirements.
Further on video recording, the EOS R has supported the gamma log called Canon Log. This feature offers flexibility in post-production processing such as color grading. With external devices via an HDMI port, the Canon Log EOS R can record 10-bit 4K with extensive color gamut.
Verdict
After entering the menu, dive to understand the features offered, and customize buttons, knobs or physical dial, extra rings on the lens, and force yourself using the touch bar. Finally, I gained full control and drowning when shooting using EOS R.
It is clear that the Canon EOS R is intended for high-end photographers, no wonder the price of the body of the EOS R and RF lenses is expensive. As the first, I understand very well that the EOS R still has a number of shortcomings and is a little behind the competitor's current full frame ruler.
Canon's future rests on this EOS R and mount RF system, replacing their EOS DSLR system created almost 30 years ago.
