Panasonic Lumix S1R and Lumix S1 Officially Launches its Duo Mirrorless Full-Frame Camera
After long dominating the market of full-frame mirrorless cameras, Sony in 2019 will face fairly fierce resistance from its new rivals. One of them is Panasonic, which recently opened its first full-frame mirrorless camera, Lumix S1R and S1, after revealing its teaser at the 2018 Photokina event.
As we have seen since the first announcement, the difference between Lumix S1R and S1 is similar to Sony a7R and a7. Lumix S1R is a model that is truly dedicated to photography by relying on a 47.3-megapixel full-frame sensor. Lumix S1 on the other hand "only" packs 24.2-megapixel resolution on its full-frame sensor.
However, Lumix S1 is actually more superior regarding videography. Both cameras are equally capable of recording 4K 4K video, but Lumix S1R still relies on the pixel binning method, while Lumix S1 actually utilizes the entire sensor cross-section. This case is exactly the same as in the Sony camp, where more videographers chose Sony a7 III rather than a7R III.
The next difference lies in the High-Resolution mode offered by both cameras: Lumix S1R can produce a total resolution of 187 megapixels, while the Lumix S1 is only 96 megapixels. The good news is that the difference between the two cameras stops there.
Moreover, both Lumix S1R and S1 are both highly capable mirrorless full-frame cameras. The performance is quite capable, with the ability to snap without stopping as fast as 9 fps (or 6 fps with continuous AF). If a resolution is not a priority, users can use the 6K Photo mode to extract 18-megapixel resolution photos from shots at 30 fps.
The autofocus system used is the latest generation of DFD (Depth From Defocus), which is claimed to be more skillful about tracking thanks to machine learning involvement in identifying moving subjects. The 5-axis image stabilization system is also a standard feature on these two cameras.
Another breakthrough implemented by Panasonic comes in the form of an electronic viewfinder with an OLED panel with a resolution of 5.76 million dots, the highest resolution available today. The refresh rate can also be chosen between 60 or 120 fps, then underneath there is still a 3-inch touch screen with a resolution of 2.1 million dots, which unfortunately is not fully articulated, but can only be tilted on three shafts.
Physically, both of them carry a magnesium chassis that is ready to hit bad weather. The lens holder used is Leica-made L-Mount, but later there will also be a range of lenses from Panasonic and Sigma.
Then when will Panasonic market it? Early April, with a price tag of $ 3,699 for Lumix S1R (body only) and $ 2,499 for Lumix S1. Bundles with a new 24-105mm f / 4 lens are also available for $ 4,599 (S1R) or $ 3,399 (S1). Panasonic seems to be quite confident with their debut in the full-frame realm if they see a higher price tag than the Sony a7R III and a7 III duo.
